New Bartok String Quartet consists of violinists Wanchi and Airi Yoshioka, violist James Stern and cellist Eric Kutz. Each has performed nationally and internationally. Wanchi teaches violin at James Madison University; Yoshioka teaches violin at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Stern teaches violin at the University of Maryland, College Park; and Kutz teaches cello at the University of Maryland, College Park. The program, East Meets West, features works by Austrian composer W.A. Mozart and Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. The quartet will perform Mozart’s famous String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, K. 465 “Dissonance,” and Bartók’s String Quartet No. 6.

Featuring an “incisive technique and an exceptionally rich and beautiful tone,” Wanchi is an active performer at venues including the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and numerous music festivals around the world. She joined “Curtis on Tour” for the 2017-2018 season. Her fourth CD under Centaur Records, which presents music by William Walton and Benjamin Britten in a collaboration with longtime friend and pianist Robert Koenig, was released in May 2019.  Full bio

Hailed by Gramophone as “brilliant and intrepid,” violinist Airi Yoshioka has performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia as a recitalist, soloist and chamber musician. She is the founding member of Duo della Luna, Damocles Trio and Voyager Ensemble, and has performed/recorded with the Emerson, Brentano and Arditti quartets. A principal member of Continuum, ModernWorks, Son Sonora, Azure, Ensemble Pi and RUCKUS ensembles, she has recorded for New World, Claves, Mode and Albany Records.  Full bio

Violinist James Stern has performed at The National Gallery, Smithsonian museums, The Phillips Collection, and the Library of Congress with the Smithsonian Chamber Players and VERGE Ensemble, with whom he has also toured internationally. Stern has performed at the Marlboro and Ravinia festivals. His solo Bach CD is available on Albany Records. He tours nationally with Strata (violin, clarinet, piano). Stern is a professor at the University of Maryland.  Full bio

Cellist Eric Kutz has captivated audiences across North America, Asia and Europe. Kutz is a member of the Murasaki Duo, a cello and piano ensemble that has released three commercial CDs. He summers in Chicago as a member of the Grant Park Orchestra. Kutz is on faculty at the University of Maryland School of Music  where he holds the Barbara K. Steppel Memorial Faculty Fellowship. He holds degrees from The Juilliard School and Rice University.  Full bio
