Bluestone Winds is the faculty woodwind quintet-in-residence in the James Madison University School of Music. Featuring Beth Chandler (flute), Jeanette Zkyo (oboe), Sarunas Jankauskas (clarinet), Sue Barber (bassoon) and Ian Zook (horn), the quintet’s members are full-time professors of applied music at JMU and are also active as solo recitalists, chamber musicians, orchestral players and clinicians. The faculty quintet was originally founded in 1975, and the current ensemble has been performing together since 2016.

The ensemble will present a varied program of standard quintet repertoire as well as literature by lesser-known composers, including Alexander Zemlinsky’s charming Humoreske (Rondo) (1939) and David Maslanka’s epic Quintet No. 1 (1996). Concluding the program is Francis Poulenc’s masterwork Sextet (1932-39) for wind quintet and piano, featuring JMU faculty pianist Paulo Steinberg.
